Life Lately: Because My Parents Learned How to Text

Can I just document this?  It’s hilarious and terribly cool at the same time.

For the longest time, my parents didn’t learn how to text.  We (the kids) tried to teach them, but it was just too complicated, so they just told us to call them.  We eventually got my mom to text, but sometimes her responses would be hard to decipher.

About 2 months ago, my mom sent her first picture text.  She was so excited, she had to send more.  It was so cute!  She would text me randomly just to check on me and send me pictures of her flowers that were blooming.  I figured all this time, my dad was still anti-texting.

It was my dad’s birthday about a week ago, and I wanted to call him to tell him “Happy Birthday” while he was at work.  I’ve done this before, and he always picked up right away.  Well, he didn’t pick up this time.  Typically, he’d call me back once he was free, but he didn’t.  It was getting late.  I didn’t want to miss telling him happy birthday on his actual birthday, so, just for kicks, I texted him.  At least SOMETHING would arrive to him wishing him a happy birthday, and I wouldn’t feel like a horrible daughter.  Well, a few minutes later, he texted back!  He texted a perfectly cohesive “Thank you my daughter” text!  It was so cute!  I was just laughing and smiling to myself.  I was also so proud of my dad.  I had to tell my sister who was shocked too.  It was hilarious.

Apparently my parents know how to receive photos now too which is pretty cool.  I feel so much more connected with them knowing they can do these things now.  Is that weird?  Is that the world we live in now?  It’s so nice to share photos with them instantly instead of waiting to make a photo book… or trying to get around to making photobooks… or sending 10 emails in order to get all of the photos onto their computer so they can show their friends (then have half of the bounce back because the files were too large).

Anyway, I just thought it was an epic moment of the weekend as I was having dinner with my family and actually telling the story with everyone.  I sent the family photos we took that night too, and watching them save the photos to their phones was really oddly… comforting.  Is that the right word?  Soothing?  Not quite sure, but I think you get what I’m trying to say.

Anyway, here’s a link of funny texts sent from parents to their kids. 🙂
