The Getty Villa

This past Monday was my 29th birthday.  Fairly often, my birthday lands on Memorial Day weekend which feeds me into this world of celebrating the entire long weekend.  This year, however, I decided to keep it pretty low key.  I just wanted to make sure all necessities were met without too much hubbub — time with family (dinner + dessert at home), time with friends (potluck at home), and time with hubby (this post!).  It actually turned out really sweet and oh-so-relaxing.  It was just what the doctor ordered.  We can save the crazy fireworks for the big 3-0… or not 🙂
The Getty Villa was the destination of choice for a nice day trip with my love.  It sits on top of a hill in beautiful Malibu which definitely piqued my hubby’s interest because it meant he could cruise up Topanga Canyon to the coast.
I’ve been wanting to go here for quite some time but never really remembered to fit it in our schedule.  With this museum, you have to make a reservation prior to arriving as they like to keep the museum’s traffic well-regulated.  It’s much appreciated as you get to spend more time admiring the buildings and art without a mass of tourists bumbling about.
I have to say, this place is incredibly beautiful.  The moment you enter the gate, you’ve arrived in a completely different destination.  It felt like a short European getaway (including cobblestone roads that drove Tristan bonkers).  I loved it.  It was beautiful and so very peaceful.

We went on a free garden tour which showed us the different herbs and some of the history and origins of a lot of the plants.  You’ll learn more and more how unique every detail is.  There’s also a short movie you can catch near the entrance which talks about Mr. Getty and his vision for the Villa.

Around lunch, we grabbed our picnic bag from coat check and ate under grapevines that we saw on the tour.  Not totally sure if we were allowed to eat there, but nobody seemed to have a problem 🙂  To be clear, they have no problem with you bringing food and drinks in.  There’s designated patio areas for eating, but who wants to sit on a patio table when you can sit under lovely grapevines?

Overall, it’s definitely a gem on the California coast, and I’m so glad I got to take a stroll (and picnic!) around the museum on such a gorgeous day with my husband.  It was a perfect birthday for sure!
