So, how exactly did I tell my husband that I was pregnant with our first child? Let’s just say I had a plan in mind.
Tristan and I always joke that we were like two peas in a pod. We balanced each other out and just fit very cozy together. We were a pair of Aces. Aladdin to Jasmine. Honey to Pooh Bear. You get the picture.
A few years ago, after we had watched Toy Story 3 together, I told Tristan that I loooooved the peas in the movie. They were so adorable that I just wanted to squish them. That upcoming Christmas, he bought me the stuffed toy of the peas. ADORABLE.
Once we decided to let nature take its course in the babymaking world, I knew I had to think of something cute and fun for when the day finally came when a test turned positive. My plan was to walk up to him and hand him one of the peas. I’d wait for the funny, confused look on his face, then have him place the pea into the pod and ask him “Are you ready to add a pea to our pod?”
Adorable, right? Totally didn’t happen that way.
For about a week, I was just having the worst case of bloat. I had run out of pregnancy tests at home, and Tristan had just called to tell me he was on his way home from work. I asked him to just drop by a dollar store and grab a few tests because whatever was causing the bloat was annoying me. I wanted to at least rule the easiest thing to test out.
I really doubted that it would turn positive. It just didn’t seem possible at the time, so when it came down to taking the test, I really thought nothing of it. Well, before the “wait time” on the test was even close to hitting, the second line on the test showed up. I stared at it for a good minute turning it from one angle to the next. Is it the lighting? Is this thing accurate?
I’ve taken these dollar tests before, and the doctor even said they’re just as accurate as the $15 ones you get at Target. So, you know, if anyone was ever wondering if those ones at the 99 cent store even worked, here’s your proof!
Anyhow, after I was done glaring at the two lines, I had to figure out how to tell Tristan. He was upstairs washing up, and I wanted to give him the pea so badly, but I wasn’t sure how it would work in this situation. I thought that when this did happen, I would take a test without him knowing then surprise him. The last thing I thought would happen today was that this test would turn positive. I slowly went upstairs and smiled at him. The words just came blurting out. “Are you ready to add a pea to our pod?” He had a big smile on his face. “Really??” I showed him the test and the box, pointed at the Spanish translated results and said “Positivo!” We laughed, and hugged, and kissed. It was a really precious moment. It didn’t turn out exactly as I had planned, but I kinda think it turned out even better. We hugged and kissed, and then we hugged some more.
If you’re wondering, I waited until the next morning to take another test just in case. Sure enough, it instantly showed positive. Two days later, I went out to buy the ones at Target (because I was hesitant about the dollar ones too), and that too became positive right away. Both tests were totally legit. I called the doctor to set up our first prenatal appointment.
That was that. Now, we’re just enjoying the journey of watching our little pea grow and grow. 🙂
