[foodventures] Smorgasburg LA

A few weeks ago, my friend Teresa texted me to let me know that Smorgasburg was coming to LA.  I’ve heard of the NY event before, but I didn’t know much about it.  All I knew was that it had to do with good food.  Not just any regular food – GOOD food.  I took a look at the list of vendors that would be participating, and I had heard of several of them through foodie shows and social media but hadn’t gotten around to trying them out yet.  I knew at some point we had to go.  Luckily, this past Sunday worked out perfectly for all of us!

Smorgasburg is basically an outdoor market where you’ll find dozens of great food and goods vendors.  The ones currently featured are very hip which was a fun change.  Every vendor had edible options that were so enticing; it was hard to know where to start.  There’s also a wide range of options, so you’ll find carnivorous to vegan options and options inspired from different parts of the world.  If I remember it correctly, we sampled 5 vendors: Amazebowls, Mama Musubi, Califas Taco, Donut Friend, and Ugly Drum.  That doesn’t include the several bites we got to try of our friends’ foods haha.

You’ll find plenty of outdoor seating with umbrellas as well as several tables right outside of the lot.  There’s also a mist area to help you cool down from the hot California heat.  If you’re wondering, the event was really kid-friendly with plenty of space to walk around and also manage pushing a stroller.  The space is perfect for meeting up with friends and catching up while enjoying some good eats.

Dominic is becoming a quick learner with how we pay for things these days!  He likes to take our cards out and hand them to us, then take it back quickly. Haha.  In case you’re wondering, most vendors at the event do take card, although a few are “cash only” so make sure you check before you decide to wait in a line and find you don’t have enough cash (not fun!).

The event is open from 10am – 6pm on Sundays.  There is no entry fee and parking is free for the first 2 hours (in a brand new covered parking garage too).  We found a table and just switched off as we each got food and ended up spending the full 2 hours there.  We got there around 10:15am and all of the lines were short.  It was getting more crowded as noon hit, and our friends said it gets increasingly packed so if you want to keep your food options open, go early.  Otherwise you’ll either find yourself waiting in long lines or only eating at the places with short lines — although, that’s not so bad since it seems like every vendor here offers some delicious eats.

I feel like we could’ve hung around even longer just because all of the food looked so good, but luckily we don’t live too far.  I love that our experience will be different every time with so many options for us to choose from.  We’ll be back again before the summer is over! 🙂
