I remember when my husband first mentioned “It’s It.” We were still dating then, and I just looked at him confused, like What on earth are you talking about? We were talking about classic ice creams, and when he mentioned this particular one, it was like a sweet, sweet memory.
Oddly enough, a few months after he mentioned it, we started spotting it in our local markets; and one day, we decided to buy a box. Tristan promised me that my life would be forever changed, and it has. It’s delicious. No other ice cream sandwich really seems to match it despite how simple it really is. It’s basically 2 chewy oatmeal cookies sandwiching a heaping amount of ice cream, and the entire thing is dipped in dark chocolate.
The sandwich originated in San Francisco and is considered San Francisco’s tradition, but you can find it in several states now. Thanks to their online site, however, you can order and enjoy it anywhere in the U.S. It actually has a long and interesting history which you can read more about on the site (link at end of post).
There is, however, a store in the San Francisco area – Burlingame to be exact. It’s the headquarters and factory store! We’ve driven by it a few times and have been tempted to visit, but we never just went for it. Well, on one trip, we decided it was time to go, and we made sure my sis-in-law and her family joined us for our little venture. We heard you can get special and hard-to-find flavors here, and when we went, the pumpkin flavor was available. You’ll find vanilla, mint, and strawberry most commonly in stores.
Hubby is in heaven.^
It’s a really small and cute little store, but it does its job. When we first arrived, they gave us free oatmeal cookies to enjoy as we chose our ice cream sandwiches. Most people we noticed filled boxes with the sandwiches, but you’re definitely welcome to buy just one 🙂
Dom’s first taste of It’s It! His face looked questionable, but he dove in for another bite soon after^
If you’re ever in the San Francisco area, I definitely recommend stopping by for a sweet treat! You won’t regret it (and this is coming from someone who isn’t a huge fan of oatmeal cookies)!
Oh, when we went, they had free giveaways if you posted and shared that you went to the factory, so be on the lookout for a fun giveaway when you go too!
….Because a family that eats It’s It together, stays together 🙂
