Have you ever noticed how some toys seem to last through several stages of a kid’s life and some only exist for as long as a few weeks (maybe even *gasp* hours)? Toys that tend to have that extra longevity are open-ended toys – toys that allow for pretend play and foster creativity and imagination.  The creative use can vary from day-to-day.

When I was contacted by Picasso Tiles, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that they’re an award-winning STEM toy brand.  If you aren’t familiar with STEM, it stands for techniques that encourage education through Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.  Another plus?  They’re all open-ended toys!  Though Picasso Tiles offers a variety of toys that cover all of these bases, I knew Dominic would be most interested in the Nuts & Bolts set which focuses on Engineering.  They were kind enough to send us a kit to try it out.

The box is nice and compact and comes with 100 pieces as well as a handy tool to assemble the parts.  You can assemble things using the booklet of ideas, use the booklet as inspiration for your own things, or really create something you want from scratch!

Every since he was barely standing, he loved to stare at things to see how they worked.  To this day, you can still find him observing every little detail of new things to understand how they function.  He also loves wheels, and the Nuts & Bolts set includes wheels.  He was excited to build anything and everything with the wheels just like I anticipated 🙂

Not only does this toy help him celebrate and enjoy his unique desire to understand function and building, it also allows him to be completely creative in a fun and stimulating way.  As an open-ended toy with no real age limit, it can help to foster his imagination and creativity for years to come.  I’ll be honest – I had fun building and creating new things with him too!

It’s toys like these that are definitely welcome in our home because I know we’ll find some use for it year after year.  I highly recommend their product!
